Re: Rommel's awards
Hello all,
This photo, i believe, shows Rommel receiving the The Military Order of Savoy in Gold in photo dated 11 May 1941. Yet, i read that it awarded mid-1942.
Thoughts?
Cheers, David

This is a great photo. Based on the photo above of Rommel's awards, showing two neck orders of the Military Order of Savoy, I am thinking he was awarded the Commander grade FIRST, and then the Grand Officer class on 15.01.1942.
Is the date printed on the back of this photo? Or how has it been dated?
Kind regards
Pierce

Hi Luftk, the date is written on a caption on the reverse of the photo.

It looks more like a ribbon bar?udondave wrote:Hi all,

Given that Rommel is wearing the Oak-leaves with the rank of Generalleutnant this photo could probably be dated from late March 1941 - June 1941. After that Rommel was promoted to General. The timeline fits for the awarding of the Italian Bravery Medal in Silver....but it just doesn't look like that ribbon. Rommel was awarded the Italian Bravery Medal by Generale d’Armata Italo Gariboldi but I don't think this is him.
Can the officer awarding this be IDed?

Hi luftk,
I believe this is Attilio Peruzzi, Minister for Italian Africa 1939–43.

Re: Rommel's awards
Hi luftk,
I agree that the above award does look medal bar. Is it possible, though, that this is the awarding of the Silver Bravery Medal given the shape and sheen of the ribbon ?

I'm inclined to agree, given the photographic evidence.

From memory, I believe it was April 1941. I have the exact date in my files and will post it tomorrow.
