German Cross in Gold Holders Identification

#1

Post by Daniel L » 19 Dec 2004, 14:35

It has been decided to try to gather all these in one thread. This thread is therefore dedicated to identify photos of unidentified holders of the German cross in gold. The German cross in gold was instituted one the 28 September, 1941 and 24 204 crosses were awarded.

Hi!

Whilst it's difficult to tell whether this General is wearing the DKiG or DKiS, I'll post this anyway. All I know is that the pic was taken in Riga at a visit to the harbour.

Regards,

VJK

Who was he? Looks awefully familiar. Just can't place him.

That's DKiS-holder Oberstleutnant Helmut Brandt, DKis 08.07.1943 for his work in Panzer-AOK 4.

It's a late war picture, probably taken in 1945, thus he later got promoted.

Sorry Daniel,

I can't find a Gen Helmut Brandt. There was GenMj Heinz Brandt promoted posthumously for having died from the July 20 1944 bomb plot. Looks like him but Heinz had no DGiS.

Sorry, I messed up. The person on the photo is Generalmajor Helmut Kleikamp, DKiG am 19.12.1944.

Spot on! Thank you, sure beats the civvy-clothed Kleikamp in Biblio Verlag.

You made me a happy man. :P :P

This might be Joachim Schmitz, but it's only a guess, although he has striking similarities with him. He received the award as Leutnant in 2./Panzerjäger-Abteilung 90 on the 19. January, 1942.

I know that comments on photos (too) often lie, this was supposed to be in Normandy in 1944. Is it possible?

best,
