Hello Adalberto,

The correct spelling is Zäpffel (two f).

Jan Houtermann's site gives his date of birth as 31. August 1882. Death in 1950. Houtermann also lists Zäpffel as being promoted to Generalmajor z.V. on 01.02.1942 with patent to 01.02.1941.

He was also already Oberst in the Austrian Army. The following site lists Zäpffel as commander of LAR. 2 Leichtes Artillerieregiment (2.Division - Vienna) in 1938 with a seniority dating to 23. June 1936.

http://www.austro-hungarian-army.co.uk/bund38.htm.

See Lexikon der Wehrmacht for specific dates for his artillery commands.

Best

Alain DeBonville

Hello all,
Alexander Zäpffel was my grandfather, I have some of his personal records that may be of help in answering questions if you may have any. I'm also curious to hear why you are interested in him.
Thanks
MvM

Zäpffel was NOT retired as Char. GM on 31.01.1939.

20.04.1939 Charakter als Generalmajor mit Wirkung vom 01.04.1939
30.06.1939 retired

This is also the date on which AR 96 was handed over from Zäpffel to Fritz Kistner.
