313 Axel Erik Heinrichs 1890 – 1965
Finnish General. Chief of Staff III Finnish Corps. Ritterkreuz.
General of Infantry Erik Heinrichs was Chief of the Finnish General Staff, not that of the III Army Corps. He had commanded III Army Corps back in 1939-40.

BTW, I wonder why Lieutenant-General Hjalmar Siilasvuo, CO of the Finnish III Army Corps who fought under German command until 1943 (IIRC), doesn't show up? Perhaps he is one of the unidentified signatures.

Thanks Mikko. I've corrected that. No Siilasvuo isn't one of the illegible signatures. I have some letters from him to Boehme so I would recognise it. Curious though as you say particularly as his son signed the book in 1944!

I'll ask my mum when we are next together if she recognises any of the unnamed. As a young girl she went to many of these people's houses, in fact her farther might be an unrecognised one. We are translating part of her father's diary covering his Jaeger period in Germany, is there a good place to post it on this forum.

Thanks MartH. I think you might have to be a bit more specific about your grandfather's service before anyone is able to suggest a suitable posting point.

The diary is actually his narrative based written in 1918 based upon his diary 1916 to 1918. He joined the Jaegers in 1916, and had a long military service refusing a promotion to General in 1945/6. The narrative starts with him and a young "O" washing in a ditch and looking for food in 1916. O is Oinonen one of his good friends.

318, incorrect spelling:

Maj. H. Helenius, cdr of Erillisosasto Sau [Separate Detachment Saunakangas *]

* Usually "Sau" is said to mean Savukoski but apparently it is incorrect because the HQ base of this unit was at a place called Saunakangas which although was in Savukoski. I have not managed to find out is the maj. H. Helenius who was the Finnish Military Attache in Berlin (and later Finnish liaison officer at OKL) between 1940 - 1941 the same person or another officer.

This special unit was formed on 23.12.1942 for anti-partisan and security operations behind the front. Detachment had five Separate Light Platoons and two larger units (total strength 500 - 600 men). Platoons were led at least by
Lt. Olavi Alakulppi (who after the war had another career in US Army, master of Nordic skiing),
Lt. P. Pitkänen (master of Nordic skiing),
Lt. Mandelin and
Lt. Kalliopuska.
Lt.(or Capt.?) Laakso led 14th Separate Detachment and Lt. Oinonen led Company Oinonen.
It is possible that also some of these names are in this guestbook.

The reason is simple. Lt.Gen. Siilasvuo commanded III AK only until July 1942. Col./Maj.Gen.(16.11.42) [Frans] Uno Fagernäs (also CO of 3rd Division) was an acting commander between 7.1942 - 21.10.1943. Siilasvuo returned to his old post in spring 1944 after III AK had been moved to Karelian Isthmus (took command on 4.3.1944).
