Erich Hartmann

Hello all,

I am looking for photos of the greatest ace of all time, Erich Hartmann. I haven't been able to find many. I am looking for photos from any time period, and i'm really looking for some photos post-war of him, either when he was in russian captivity, or when he was serving in the West-German Post-War Air Force.

Thanks many,

Dan

Hi! I don't know if a copy can still be found, but the book German Fighter Ace Erich Hartmann: The Life Story of the World's Highest Scoring Ace with commentary by Ursula Hartmann (Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1992) is packed with tons of photos from all periods of Hartmann's life. I bought one of the numbered copies of the 500 books signed by Erich Hartmann when it was first published by Schiffer. It was pretty expensive then, so I imagine a used copy, even an unsigned one, carries a pretty hefty price tag. However, it is simply THE book for photos of Germany's greatest ace! The book tells his life story via well-captioned photographs drawn from the Hartmann family photo albums and many other sources.

Regards,
Shawn

Excellent photos! I've never seen that 1961 photo before. I'd be interested to hear what Hartmanns words were during his time in post-war Germany... I'll search to see if I can find any quotes or interviews.

I know while Erich Hartmann was still in captivity in Russia, his son, Peter Erich, had died. Does anyone know if he had any other kids, and if they are still alive? Are any of Hartmann's relatives still alive?

A revived old post--great. I have a signed Hartmann print, I'll brag. Well, the guy was something else! Strange to say but I get a little tear in my eye when I think about his passing (even though he was my country's enemy). Quite a character/pilot/person.

Where was that taken-"Wolf's Lair" (Wolfshanze--how do you spell that? Don't have books right in front of me). And what was the award?
