21.11.1924 Generalmajor [VBl. 47/1924]
29.12.1926 General [VBl. 1/1927]
Thank you, very interesting. But I don't understand how Oskar Suttner could become a full general in 1926. Shouldn't he have been promoted to FML before? His later appointment as GL zV seems also to indicate a lower rank. Could it be he was FML and Titular-General? A service branch is also missing (I guess it should be "der Infanterie"?)

It´s not easy to become familiar with austrian military history, I see.

The rank of Feldmarschallleutnant was abolished in 1920 and re-installed in 1935.

From 1920 until 1930 only two ranks existed: Generalmajor and General (without branch). General der Infanterie, Kavallerie and Artillerie were re-instituted in 1930.

The rank of "General" was an equivalent to the Reichswehr Generalleutnant and not a full general (one star on the shoulderboard).

In 1935 former "Generale" were allowed to wear the uniform and the title of a Feldmarschallleutnant with two stars (but it was not a must!). Still equivalent to the Reichswehr Generalleutnant. Therefore most of the former austrian "Generale" were established as Generalleutnant z.V. in Heer or Luftwaffe.

From 1936 only one (!) full general in military functionshould should exist. It was GdI Siegmund Schilhawsky as Generaltruppeninspektor. GdI Wilhelm Zehner as second full general had a political function as "Staatssekretär für Landesverteidigung" and deputy minister of defence (Bundeskanzler Schuschnigg was Minister für Landesverteidigung in personal union).

Just a sidenote: in ÖBH2 the branch generals were abolished again. Since 1980 we have just a "General". The equivalents were:

Brigadier (one star general)
Divisionär (two stars) = Generalmajor
Korpskommandant (three stars) = Generalleutnant
General (four stars without branch designation)

In 2004 the ranks were changed again for international compatibility:

Brigadier
Generalmajor
Generalleutnant
General

This just for short.

Thanks again! Very interesting, but also very complex. Seems as if the ÖBH of the interwar period, although being smaller than the Reichswehr, was not less complicated!

@ Darko: no, it is from his "Grundbuchblatt" which contains the Bundesheer material, some of the k.u.k. material and the Wehrmacht-Fürsorge und Versorgungsakt.

On a sidenote, Suttner was born Catholic and baptized in the Pfarre St. Leopold (Wien, II. Bezirk) on 01.11.1877. No Austritt from the Catholic Church is documented in his Taufeintrag, but since he had ties with Hannover, he might have switched around his marriage.

And of course, than you for this truly awesome biography about a WWII General who was virtually unknown until now.

@Darko: thanks for posting this. Quite interesting. But the bar is not a beauty at all. This bavarian mounting style is - just in my opinion - disgusting. Godet would have made a better one....

Just a small addition:
According to a HPA appointments list, GL z.V. Oskar Suttner's z.V-Stellung aufgehoben am 31 Aug 1943.
