Hugo Sperrle

Post by lohengrin » 19 Feb 2003, 15:53

I just saw some great pictures of Hugo Sperrle. I was wondering what was his story? I looked through many books, but his bio seems always very brief. Was he a pilot in WWI as Göring? He did receive EK I, II in the first war and the RK in 1940.....

Also, I asked the guy who owns those photos about the writing on the back of the photos. He sent me this pic and just want to know if anyone could tell me what squadron is it on the pictures... I was not able to find out if there were any airfields by this name (probably in Belgium or France).

Hope anyone can help,

Best Regards,

Clara

"Besuch des Feldmarschalls Sperrle am 7.8.1942 in Rochefort"

There are two famous Rocheforts. One in Belgium and one in France, in the south of La Rochelle, the latter with an airport.

Let me know, if you don´t understand some parts.

Stauffenberg II!!!

Thank you so much, this is some great info on Sperrle and the airfields. I really appreciate this very much.

I hope it is not a big bother, but would you know who was stationed on the French Rochefort? What flying unit?

Once again your help was amazing!!!

Thank you,
Clara

Take a map and have a look at the La Rochelle-Rochefort area. Would you base fighters in this region. I really doubt. I think since June 22nd, 1941 (Operation Barbarossa) only Jagdgeschwader 2 "Richthofen" and Jagdgeschwader 26 remained in France (6 Groups with each 3 Wings), probably based in the north of France, although La Rochelle was a submarine port.

But you can easily find it by visiting http://www.ww2.dk.

There you click air units and watch the bases of the squadrons. Maybe you will find.

Greetings to Bergen (Norway?),

Hugo Sperrle was acting OB West for Witzleben in 1942 and for Rundstedt in 1943 and 1944. Does anybody have the exact dates of these tenures?
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
