Looking at the Armeegruppe Ligurien I notice that the Oberbefehlshaber Marschall Rudolfo Graziani didn't surrender until May 2, 1945, while different sources - f.ex. http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... selM-R.htm - state that his chief of staff Generalmajor Max-Josef Pemsel became a POW on April 26./27. - what were the circumstances?

Graziani surrendered to American OSS agents on 27.04.1945 at Cernobbio (on Lake Como).
Pemsel surrendered to Crittenberger's IV Corps on 29.04.1945 at Castiglione delle Stiviere (south of Lake Garda).
Both were no longer in any contact with each other or with the dispersed troops of AOK Ligurien.
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.

Any idea what the second award on Pemsel's ribbon bar is? It is not listed in the Rank List (EK1 & BM4X). Given it's precedence, and ribbon device, could it be the Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden?
Thank you

He received the Militär-Verdienstkreuz 2. Klasse mit Schwertern on 22.12.1917 and the Militär-Verdienstorden 4. Klasse mit Schwertern on 08.03.1919. Both could be worn under Bavarian regulations. As far as I know, neither was awarded with the crown, however.

Dave, thank you for your reply. The ribbon is not that of the Militär-Verdienstkreuz or Militär-Verdienstorden. The third ribbon is certainly that of the MVO.

The second ribbon looks a lot like the ribbon for the Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden but I have no record of him receiving this. It is something of a mystery. I have tried to find some postwar photos of him, showing his 57er ribbon bar, but nothing that is detailed has yet surfaced.

Below Ritterkreuz = Hungarian Order of Merit - Commander with war decoration and swords.
