Did Himmler Earn a Pilot Badge? (Photo)

#1

Post by sylvieK4 » 31 Mar 2003, 16:54

Here are a few photos of Heinrich Himmler with the "Grand Mufti of Jerusalem", the Haj Amin al Husseini. Is that a pilot badge on Himmler's uniform? Was Himmler actually a qualified pilot? I knew Heydrich flew, but not Himmler. Any information about how or when he received this badge?

No Himmler did not earn the award by flying, it was an honorary award from Göring to Himmler.

Best
Martin

What's the point of having an award if you didn't earn it. That would be like pe putting on a Purple Heart, even thought I was never in the service or wounded. It's not fair.

That award was always honorary so in which way did he not earn it?

So it was more like a gift (from Goring)?

Yes, it was a mehtod of gaining the favor of people that it was given to. Sepp Deitrich was awarded the badge and wore it too.

This is right. It had to do with Goering giving up the Gestapo, which he created, to the control of Himmler's SS.

There was some sort of skullduggery going on but it boiled down to something about not losing face -Himmler gets the Gestapo - Goering confirs a "bigger" honour on Himmler - Himmler doesn't have Goering bumped off.

No he couldn't.

Apart from the wings he had confered on him by Goering, the closest he came to real wings was running his chicken farm before he took up the Nazi cause.

I think it is an honorary thing because Himmler let other third reich leaders have an honorary position in the SS (For instance, Joachim von Ribbentrop who was reportedly very proud of his uniform.)
