His mother had married a man 23 years her elder whom she called "uncle Alois"; her three small children died in the course of a few years surrounding Adolf's birth, leading to extreme pampering of Adolf by his mother. He was regularly beaten and ridiculed by his father; once when Adolf tried to escape from home he was almost beaten to death. Adolf hated his father throughout his life and there are reports of him having nightmares about his father in late life. When Nazi Germany had occupied Austria, Hitler had the village where his father grew up destroyed.
Hitlers Father
Hitlers Father
I recently found the following short passage at http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adolf_Hitler. Does somebody have more information about the destruction of his fathers birthplace?

Alois Hitler, the illegitimate son of a housemaid, was born in Strones, Austria in 1837. Adolf Hitler ordered it destroyed when the adjoining military training facility of Döllersheim was expanded; and this is even all the more peculiar since the village had been located at the outermost perimeter of this facility and could have been spared with only minimal effort. And although its residents were each given new homes someplace else, Siedlungsraum and an album with photographs of the vanished community has vanished completely.

SORRY, IT'S A MYTH
Sorry, this is simply another myth. Hitler DID NOT order or have his paternal home village area destroyed. Several recent Austrian books on the subject confirm this, thru photos and recollections. The German military did establish a training area just north of Doellersheim and Strones in 1938, but the area was not completely depopulated until 1942. At this time, a commemorative book was published for those who had to move out of the area, with MANY photos showing that the local houses were not destroyed. In fact, the Hitler house in Strones was preserved as a shrine until 1942, and was a popular visiting site for Nazis and others. The grave of Hitler's grandmother in Doellersheim was similarly preserved as a shrine, with local HJ and BDM groups assigned to see to its upkeep.
Recent research by locals has shown that the post-1942 German military activities did not do substantial damage to the area, and in fact, not even the post-1945 Soviet occupation did that much destruction. It is true that Strones now no longer exists, but this apparently came about mainly as a result of Austrian military activity there post-1955.
The southern part of the training area Allentstieg was returned to civilian control a few years ago, and the ruins of the church and town of Doellersheim are now being preserved.
