Generalmajor Hans Kohlsdorfer (1892-1969)
So, apparently the bio of Generalmajor Hans Kohlsdorfer in Wolf Keilig's Die Generale des Heeres has a number of errors. I wonder how many other general's bios are also wrong?
First, his name is wrong. He was not Hans-Ernst Kohlsdorfer, but rather Hans Richard Karl Kohlsdorfer. His father's name was Ernst, though. The birthdate and birthplace - 24.8.1892 in Breslau - are correct.
His World War I career is wrong. He was identified as the Lt. Kohlsdorfer in IR 155. The Lt. in IR 155, who was named Kurt, was not even commissioned until 24.4.17. Rather, Hans was the Lt. Kohlsdorfer in IR 176. Kohlsdorfer was indeed an aviator, but only briefly - he had a nervous breakdown after a plane crash in 1915.
Here is his correct Imperial career:
1.4.11 als Fahnenjunker i.d. IR 176 eingetreten
18.8.12 z. Lt. mit Pat. v. 23.8.10 befördert
31.7.14 z. Adj. II. Btl. ernannt
20.8.14 durch G.G. schwer verwundet
13.12.14 z. Flgr.Ers.Abt. 4 versetzt
8.2.15 z. Brieftaubenabteilung Ostende versetzt
28.6.15 z. Feldfliegerabt. 69 versetzt
xx.xx.15 nervöser Zusammenbruch infolge Absturz mit dem Flugzeug
5.8.15 z. Ers./IR 176 zurückversetzt
27.1.16 z. OLt. befördert
10.3.16 als Ausb.Offz. z. Uffz.Vorschule Frankenstein, z.Zt. Jena, kdrt.
12.5.17 z. Uffz.Vorschule Bartenstein kdrt.
22.12.17 z. I. Ers./IR 176 zurück
14.2.18 z. 7. Res.Div. versetzt u. d. RIR 72 zugeteilt
xx.xx.18 nervöser Zusammenbruch u. Knieverletzung infolge einer Verschüttung
17.8.18 z. I. Ers./IR 176 zurück
1.10.18 z. 87. Inf.Div. versetzt u. d. Feldrekr.Dep. d. 87. ID zugeteilt
11.12.18 z. I. Ers./IR 176 zurück
20.1.19 als Adj. z. Kdtr. Breslau kdrt.
15.2.19 z. I. Ers./IR 176 zurück
26.2.19 z. IR 176
8.10.19 z. Abwickl.Stelle IR 176 versetzt
17.12.19 z. Sipo Mitteldeutschland Berlin kdrt.
27.3.20 mit d. Char. als Hptm. verabschiedet
And his career in the Wehrmacht, which after the first few entries mostly matched Keilig (the exact dates don't always match up, but that seems to happen a lot, even with different documents within the same personnel file). The dates are as recorded in his Dienstlaufbahn. The Dienstlaufbahn only has entries up to 14.2.45; are there other sources to confirm the promotion date to GM and the dates for command of 545. VGD?

Re: Kohlsdorfer, Hans - Errors in Keilig
Dave
The HPA card that lists the commanders of 545. Inf.-Division shows:
27.3.45 Obst 1.4.42 (229) Kohlsdorfer m.d.F.b.
10.4.45 Obst 1.4.42 (229) Kohlsdorfer
Also HPA order dated 24 March 1945 states:
"21.) Oberst Kohlsdorfer , Führ.Res. OKH, kdt. zur H'Gruppe Mitte, ist mit Führung 545. VGD zu beauftragen"
and HPA order dated 7 April 1945 states:
"48.) Oberst Kohlsdorfer , m.d.F.b. 545. VGD, ist mit Führung 545. ID zu beauftragen"
Keilig has lots of mistakes and omissions, many of which are quite serious and for some time were almost accepted as fact. All of the main secondary sources, including Mehner, Wegmann and Zweng, and Bradley/Hildebrand also contain many mistakes and omissions. Even Scherzer is not always correct!

Re: Kohlsdorfer, Hans - Errors in Keilig
Hello Dave,
thanks for this great addition on Kohlsdorfer's bio. A lot of bios need to be corrected ...
According to a Karteikarte I have (on T78 R908 frame 0520) :
21.11.44 kdt. z. W.Kdtr. Litzmannstadt
Regards
Rudolf

Also thanks to the mod staff for the fix to Matterstock. I thought I had changed that in my transcription of the Dienstlaufbahn, but somehow undid my own fix.
Re: Kohlsdorfer, Hans - Errors in Keilig
Guys
I can't find a copy of the HPA order promoting him but the HPA list of generals who commanded divisions mFb show a date of 20 April 1945 when he stopped being mdFb (and presumably became Kdr).

Of course, the best proof of his promotion is his own card from the Generalskartei. It also confirms:
27.03.1945 mFb 545. VGD
10.04.1945 mFb 545. ID
20.04.1945 Kdr 545. ID
27.03.1945 mFb 545. VGD
10.04.1945 mFb 545. ID
20.04.1945 Kdr 545. ID
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
