He was retired after the first world war for medical reasons. Would like to know if he served again in the following conflict.
Did former WWI Uboat commander Johannes Spiess serve in WW2?

Re: Did former WWI Uboat commander Johannes Spiess serve in
Hello Felix,
yes, he did. Although he is not listed in the Lohmann/Hildebrand history of the Kriegsmarine, his wartime career is summarized in the "Crewbook" of the class of 1907.
It does not mention the rank he attained during WW2 but gives the following details:
1940: Oberkommando der Wehrmacht - Propaganda Department. Accompanied the point of the German advance into France to occupy the French naval ministry and then provisionally took over the docks at Nantes and Saint Nazaire. 1941 with the Abwehr and 1942, Port Commandant of Pallice and St. Jean de Luz respectively. 1942/43 on the staff of Marinegruppenkommando West in Paris and 1943/44 on the staff of the Oberkommando der Marine. Retired in 1944.
Regards
Glenn

Hi Guys,
This is what makes sites like AHF so worthwhile.
A concise question followed by an informed reply.
Well done both.
If only all threads were such value for money!

Interesting. I'd guess that he ended up a Kapitan z.S. Maybe someone can tell us.
