I am looking for detailed biographical information regarding Major Friedrich-August von Michael, who received the Knight's cross of the Iron Cross as Hauptmann and commander of II./GrenRgt 172 (75. InfDiv) in February 1945. Who can help?

Hello Daniel,

the only thing I've found on his military career is that from 1964 - 1966 he was commander of the Wach-Bataillon in Bonn.

Otherwise here's a bit on his family from GHdA (1977, pp. 322):

His father was Dr. iur. Friedrich Heinrich Christian Ludwig Karl August von Michael
* Groß-Plasten 16. 8. 1857
+ Groß-Plasten 22. 3. 1929
He was the owner of the estate farm Groß-Plasten in Mecklenburg.

oo Liegnitz 14. 12. 1911 Johanna Ida Elisabeth Irmgart von Kirchbach.
* Bojanowo (Posen Province) 26. 1. 1882
+ Groß-Plasten 29./30. 4. 1945 (before the Soviet occupation)

For both it was the second marriage, their first ones having ended in divorce.

Child:

Friedrich August Louis Werner Hugo Hubert von Michael
* Groß-Plasten 10. 3. 1917
+ Munich 20. 7. 2007

oo I. Groß-Plasten 28. 5. 1943 Gudrun von Wedelstaedt
* Düsseldorf 23. 6. 1923
+ Groß-Plasten 29./30. 4. 1945 (before the Soviet occupation)

oo II. Essen 31. 12. 1955 Ingrid Scheer
* Essen 23. 10. 1929

Children:

first marriage: Friedrich Karl, * Waren 4. 10. 1944, + Groß-Plasten 30. 4. 1945 (before the Soviet occupation)
second marriage: Karl Friedrich Stephan Christian, * Hammelburg 11. 2. 1957

That his mother, his wife and their son died on the same date implies it was a suicide case though it doesn't say so explicitly in GHdA. This was a common phenomenon in regions facing Soviet occupation in 1945. Sometimes even in small towns the death toll from such cases went into the hundreds.
