Hello
How come everywhere (Internet, Ritterkreuz, Kreuz in Gold, etc.) his name is with "von"(sometimes even as Reichsfrhr. v.) whilst in both DAL 43 and 44 as well as in his Karteikarte without "von" ? What is correct in the period 9.39-5.45 ?

Hello Rossano,

the basics are the same as for (Freiherr von) Hauser (http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 1#p1912121):
Loss of his nobility title in 1919, began to use it again after 1938 but Wehrmacht administration didn't react to that.

What's really difficult is to find out his correct name when he was born. The best source to research is presumably Gaupp (1978) but this book is available only in two libraries in Stuttgart.

This line of the Gaupp family was nobilitated in 1661, becoming a simple 'von Gaupp'. The first time we find the title 'Ritter von Gaupp' is in a job application from 1799. At least since 1849 they called themselves 'Ritter Gaupp von Berghausen'. In the 1890s this developed into the even more impressive 'Reichsritter Gaupp von Berghausen' (Svoboda, 1894, p.235). The driving force behind this change appears to have been Ludwig G.-B. (1834- 1897) who'd become Feldzeugmeister (3 star general) in the Austrian army. Unfortunately this form of the name is rather clumsy so like many other austrian nobles they streamlined it for everyday-use into 'Reichsritter von Gaupp-Berghausen'.

Georg was born in Vienna in 1918. The Vienna address book for 1918 show a Rittmeister d. R. Ludwig Reichsritter von Gaupp-Berghausen who must have been his father.

So from a formalistic point of view Georg's family name was in all likelihood 'Reichsritter Gaupp von Berghausen' when he was born but he obviously liked 'Reichsritter von Gaupp-Berghausen' best as the foreword in Gaupp (1978) and his obituary show.

The nobility title Reichsfreiherr is an error in von Seemen (1976, p.136) from where it migrated into Schmitz (1993, p.295), Fellgiebel (2003, p.160) and Hartmann (2010, p.143).
