Friedrich-Karl Krützmann
Friedrich-Karl Krützmann
Can anyone tell me details of this soldiers career? I know he was with a company and battalion commander with 5 Pz-Gren. of the Grossdeutschland Division, ending the war as it's commander. I know he served in Poland and France before Barabarossa, presumably as a platoon commander. He held the 1938 Sudeten unification medal so he may have risen from the ranks of the Heer.

Re: Friedrich-Karl Krützmann
Hello,
a useful synopsis of Krützmann's CV is here: http://forumarchiv.balsi.de/personen/110685.html
For most of his career Krützmann served in Schützen-Regiment 5 / Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 5 of 12. Panzer-Division in various capacities. Details can be found in Lubs (1965) where he's mentioned more than two dozen times.
According to Rehfeldt (2008, p.205) Krützmann was in Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 51 of the 18. Panzer-Grenadier-Division before coming to 'Großdeutschland' in 1945. As 18. Panzer-Grenadier-Division was being rebuilt in East Prussia in the winter 1944/45 this makes sense. Rehfeldt mentions Krützmann twice, in February 1945 as acting commander of the regiment after the death of Oberst Wolfgang Heesemann (p.317), and in early March as battalion commander in Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 'Großdeutschland' (p.205).
Since the CV mentions him being severely wounded before the end of the war I'm a bit sceptical he was the last commander of the regiment. Looks more like he came to Schleswig-Holstein with a MEDEVAC transport before the Soviets crushed the last German positions in East Prussia.

Superb! Many thanks. I have seen the Rehfeldt book, although my translation of German is pretty poor it might be time to give it a challenge

Re: Friedrich-Karl Krützmann
One point. He seems to have been a Hauptmann in 1944 and so I assume this was the promotion he received in 1943, rather than Major. So I assume he got another promotion in the period 1944-1945?
