Hello Jürgen,

Walter von Eichborn was an old war horse literally, he'd been in cavalry for most of the time. Hans shows him in OKH - Transportabteilung but it seems this didn't last very long.

Walter Johann Ludwig von Eichborn
* Breslau 11.04.1897
+ Garmisch-Partenkirchen 09.07.1971

According to Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels the 'von Eichborn's were nobilitated just in 1908. Walter is the only one in the family who was promoted beyond the junior officer ranks.

From http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/index ... egiment-8/ :
Kavallerie-Regiment-8

Regimentsadjutanten:
...
1927 - 1931 Oberleutnant v. Eichborn, Walter (D.R. 8 ) [=Dragoner-Regiment 8?]
...
In October 1931 we find him as commander of 5. / Reiter-Regiment 2 :
http://gliederungundstellenbesetzung.bl ... _4614.html
5. Eskadron (5./RR2)
Chef Oberleutnant von Eichborn
Oberleutnant Freiherr von Wolff
Leutnant Preuße
Oberwachtmeister Willy Paukstadt
The 1934 edition of Gothaisches genealogisches Taschenbuch der adeligen Häuser says:
Rittmeister und Eskadronschef im 15. (Preuß.) Reiter-Regiment
Then it seems comes the time when he was in the OKH around 1938. But he doesn't even figure in the Berlin address books of those years so I guess it was a short-lived episode.
http://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/index ... sein-Stab/

From July to September 1940 he commanded Aufklärungs-Ersatz-Abteilung 15.
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... bt15-R.htm
Kommandeure:
Ersatz-Abteilung:
...
Oberstleutnant von Eichborn 1. Juli 1940 - 30. September 1940
...
From 01.08.1943 till the end of the war Oberst von Eichborn was Abteilungsleiter in the "Zentralamt des OKW" / "Wehrmachtzentralamt" where he was head of Abteilung für Orden, Auszeichnungen, Ehrungen (Keilig, 1956, p.51).

Prior to this he'd been Gruppenleiter of Gruppe III (Orden, Auszeichnungen, Ehrungen, Allgemeines) in the Wehrmacht-Zentral-Abteilung (WZA) (Keilig, 1956, p.51). The WZA was re-structured in August 1943 and became the Wehrmachtzentralamt.
http://www.argus.bstu.bundesarchiv.de/R ... e318cc3017

For the years 1942 and 1943 (last available) he's listed in the Berlin address books so presumably he was in the WZA since 1941.

Here is Eichborn's 1944 annual evaluation:
Eichborn, Walter v 6.JPG
His position in the OKW as Chef der Ordensabteilung came with a few perks. Between March 1942 and September 1943, he managed to get himself decorated by Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia. Only Japan and Italy didn't jump on the bandwagon.

Thanks askropp! I would be very much interested in his positions 26.08.1939-1941 (was he BvTO AOK 4 in 1939).

The assassination of Major Doering proved itself such a small and unimportant event that even contemporary witnesses let themselves led by rumors.

For example, the rumor started immediately afterwards said the killer had been Gheorghe "Georges" Axiotti, Greek-Romanian boxer and former national boxing champion in 1927. Which got repeated and inflated by word of mouth over time and crept into fiction, as in Alan Furst's novel "Blood of Victory". Axiotti had nothing to do with the murder, survived the war and fought his last match on April 28, 1945, against Gheorghe Lungu.

The killer, caught immediately afterwards, identified himself as Demetrios Sarandos, Turkish citizen of Greek ethnicity and professional boxer. A thorough search proved his real name was Dimitri Sarantopoulos, Greek citizen, suspected collaborator of British intelligence. Investigated by the Germans and savagely beaten and tortured, Sarantopoulos resisted, as the investigators wrote, "immune like a faqir" and declared nothing.

So both killer and victim remained footnotes on the page in history, so unimportant that even their names are hardly ever remembered by people.
