A question about Berlin Olympics

Does anyone know what Hitler said when Jesse Owens won the race? I've got a small video clip with this episode, but unfortunately it's got no sound and anyway Hitler is sitting too far from the camera, but one can see that he isn't very pleased. I guess he said something like "verdammte Scheisse".

"Did I miss anything?"

or

"I bet he drinks carling black label!" (English Joke)

From what I understand, the whole incident has been blown up. I don't know what was said, but I don't really think that it would be anything remarkable. Maybe seeing the video would change my mind. Like any leader, you would be dissapointed when one of your countrymen loses. More so when it is to someone that is racially inferior. But the whole story about him leaving the stadium has, as I said above, been exaggerated. He was warned after the first day that going down and greeting the only the German winners was unacceptable, and I think Hitler responded with something along the lines of "This is my country, I will do what I want". Even so, he didn't go down to the track after the races after recieving that warning. Sorry I don't have a specific answer, but I don't know if there is a specific answer.

The Jesse Owens "rebuff" story has become a legend, but has no basis in truth. At the start of the games, Hitler went down and congratulated every German winner. He was then told that he should congratulate every winner, or none at all. He chose to do the latter.

That is what I meant when I said winners in my post. Thanks for pointing that out. I will change it to make it more accurate.

I have read that after the official ticking off Hitler did actually congratulate the German winners in private - it was the public showings that the IOC disapproved of.

I wondered who the athlete was that lit the torch. He came running down a ramp at the start of the Olympics bearing the torch, of course a blond haired picture of Aryan genetics.

The torchbearer was Fritz Schilgen, a 1500m runner. Incidentally, the 1936 Olympics was the first games that saw the now familiar torch relay. Supposedly it was Hitler's idea.

The obvious answer to why Owens won is simple. The Germans he was racing against weren't pure enough. Somebody made a mistake and didn't check the athletes ancestry good enough. It's the only possible explanation. If I were Hitler I would have whoever was in charge of choosing my athletes shot. It caused a great embarassment to the reich and could not be allowed to happen again.

I don't think Hitler was all that embarassed by the fact Jesse Owens won several gold medals. The nazi ideology didn't recognize blacks as a force in the struggle of races - they were not even considered sub-humans, but animals. And Hitler probably wasn't surprised that "animals" can run faster than men.
