Police Attaches

Just curious, in foreign countries, was there only one Police and Military Attache for Germany? As far as the Police Attaches go, it seems that only one man would have a hard time in keeping track of all the Germans in a foreign country. Were some assigned to Consulates? Thanks for any info.

There was also a police attache in Croatia (Zagreb):

Helm, Hans (?-24.1.1947 [SS-Obersturmbannfuehrer] -- German police attache to Croatia in Agram (Zagreb) {arrested and put on trial 9 Dec 1946 by the Supreme Military Court of Yugoslavia at Belgrade on war crimes charges; convicted and sentenced to death by hanging 22 Dec 1946 (NYT 23 Dec 1946:2:3 & 8:3; LT 23 Dec 1946:3e); executed at Belgrade 24 Jan 1947 (NYT 25 Jan 1947:2:3).(Eichmann Trial Exhibit T/892; Exhibit T/893, Statement of Hans Helm dated 18 Sept 1946; Octavianus post in Third Reich Forum: "Yugoslav War Crimes Proceedings," http://keywest.dnsvault.com/~forum3rd/p ... php?t=7980).}

Thanks for your replies! So, were there only one Police Attache for these countries? Or did they have assistants for the larger cities? I suppose their duties basically consisted of keeping an eye on the Germans there?

Kingsley -- You asked:

(1) "So, were there only one Police Attache for these countries? Or did they have assistants for the larger cities?"

For each foreign country, there was a police attache and staff, with deputies for the larger cities of that country if necessary.

(2) "I suppose their duties basically consisted of keeping an eye on the Germans there?"

No. Their duties in occupied and axis countries were to watch the politics of the country to which they were assigned, with particular reference to that country's police; to provide any advice and assistance which was in Germany's interests to the police organizations of the foreign country; to assist in the recruitment of slave laborers; and to help supervise the detention of foreign Jews and Jewish nationals for later deportation. They also watched the local Germans there.
