Oberst Paul Looff

Does anyone have any information on an Oberst Looff e.g. first name, subsequent postings etc

As at 1/8/38 he was Obstlt (38) and Kdr. II./Inf.Rgt. 31 and went on to be promoted to Oberst (19) on 1/3/43 but I can't find any later wartime postings.

Any help?

Kurt Looff is listed in the 01 Mai 1943 DAL as an Oberst and with Gren.Rgt 31 and also in the 1944/45 Rangliste as an Oberst and still being with Gren.Rgt 31.

Thanks for your response to my question, however the Units listed with Officers and their ranks in the DALs, are the last peacetime posting e.g. prior to 26/8/39 that the officer held.

Some officers were posted to new Units as part of the war mobilisation whilst others carried on with their peacetime units into the early months of the war before being posted elsewhere as new waves of units were formed.

The only exception that I have noticed to this rule with the Ranglistes is the 1942 DAL which in some cases has the current (or 41/42) location of the Officer.

In his list Hans has him as Kurt (so in Internet too), but a Karteikarte of him (in roll 912) reads Paul (Raul ?).
Has somebody his Personalakte or other official documents to clarify this ?

I can't. Since he wasn't at the front, but was in the Soviet zone, my guess is that he disappeared into the Gulag at the end of the war. Eventually, he was declared dead, but they had no idea when, so they didn't even bother with trying to set the date of death. The 1960 Beschluss was from the Kreisgericht in Zwickau, DDR, by the way.

Dear Dave, I am the grandson of Paul Looff (oldest son of the daughter born
in 1928) and you were right: My grandfather was arrested by the Russians
and that is the last thing that we know about him. My parents did repeated
research via the Red-Cross and in 2006 at a research center in Bautzen, but without any result.
As you already know my grandfather worked at the end of the war close to
Zwickau, according to my mother, in Glauchau. When he came home, he went to
the American army and got a discharge paper. Following a long-time existing
idea, he tried than to become a farmer and went to a farm, to help and
learn the business. After the change from the Americans to the Russians, my
grandfather was arrested on this farm close to Ronneburg / Saxony (I try to
find out, where it exactly was)
I think in his mind the idea of an honorable officer was kept, and he did a
total wrong estimation of the situation in may 1945, in particular in the
Russian zone.

What is your intention to do this kind of research? I was impressed, as well a little irritated how much
you know about my grandfather.

It is my plan for my time as pensioner in about ten years, to find out, in
which kind of war activities my grandfather was involved and if he was
witness of war crimes or when he would have considered that an activity is
a war crime. I am also curious in how far German officers could know the
Jalta agreements.
