Can anybody identify this General of the Wehrmacht?
Glenn,
Great pic...and wearing his medals in the Bavarian fashion! We can add the Bavarian Prinzregent Luitpold Medal to his decorations list (next to his EKII). Note his Hesse General Honor Decoration, “for Bravery” at the end of the rack: fairly typical for a member of the Bavarian 5. Infanterie-Regiment Großherzog Ernst Ludwig von Hessen. Generaloberst Eduard Dietl was also a member of this regiment and likewise held the same medal. Anybody recognize the medal second from the end of the rack?
Regards,
Shawn

Hi,
If May 1944 was the time the picture was taken, Gen Baptist Kneiss was the corp commander of Corp Kneiss. It went on to become 85 Reserve Corp in July 1944. According to my record, the two main divisions under its command were Inf Div 244 and Inf Div 338.
338 Div was commaned by GenLt Rene de l"Homme de Courbiere, as identified. 244 Div was commaned by GenLt Hans Schaefer. I don't know what he looked like. Jason Pipes listed him as having the DKiG and no RK. So that could be the general in front of the Kriegsmarine officer.
Alternatively, 198 Div came under Kneiss's command in Aug 1944. The division commander was GenMj Otto Richter. He had a DKiS but he was still on the Eastern Front until he took command of the division on June 1st 1944. Any one has a picture of Richter?
Kneiss's chief of staff was listed as an Obst Rudolf von Oppen.
Cheers
Freiherr

He was Admiral z.b.V. (basically Naval Liaison Officer) with Heeresgruppe B. Primarily tasked with preparation against invasion, sea defences and such working closely with Rommel. He is often photographed beside Rommel in his Heeresgruppe B days.
Attached is a photo of one of Rommel's inspections. The Admiral on the extreme right is Ruge, the Admiral next to hyim is Schirlitz.

I think Schaefer is a fair guess for the bearer of the DKG.
As promised another picture of the elusive party.
Identified for sure are:
GFM Rommel (in front, to the left)
Gen.Lt. de l'Homme de Courbière (in the centre)
V.Adm. Ruge (to the right, at the back, looking through the binoculars)
Hidden behind Rommel is probably Knieß (or Shaefer).
Big question: who is the general with the field cap? He is shown on the first photograph hidden behind Gen.Lt. de l'Homme de Courbière. As is shown there (and on another photograph) he wears no decoration on his right chest.
Who might this fellow be?
Regards,
Hans

Could the general in field cap possibly be Generalleutnant Dr. Wilhelm Meise, the General of Pioneers of Army Group B? He received the DKiS on 22 July 1944. Just a thought!
For gee whiz, here's Meise's WWI decorations from the 1 May 1930 Rangliste des Deutschen Reichsheeres:
• Prussian Iron Cross, 1st Class (1914)
• Prussian Iron Cross, 2nd Class (1914)
• Bavarian Military Merit Order, 4th Class with Swords and Crown
• Hesse General Honor Decoration, “for Bravery”
• Austrian Military Merit Cross, 3rd Class with War Decoration
• Wound Badge in Black – World War I award
Regards,
Shawn
