relationships
Many general rank officers of the Wehrmacht shared a last name; Heinrich and Smilo von Lüttwitz; or Hans, Rudolf, Sigfrid, and Waldemar Henrici for example. Presumably they were brothers, or cousins, or 2nd cousins, etc. Generalleutnant Helmut Friebe and Generalmajor Werner Friebe were brothers but I’m not aware of the relationships of any of the others. There were at least 15 Schmidts and over 20 Müllers! I am interested to know any relationships that anyone is aware of.

Yes, quite a few Third Reich-era generals were brothers. Here a few of the more well known brothers:
Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Keitel
General der Infanterie Bodewin Keitel
Generaloberst Alfred Jodl
General der Gebirgstruppe Ferdinand Jodl
Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge
Generalleutnant Wolfgang von Kluge
Generalfeldmarschall Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb
General der Artillerie Emil Leeb

Shawn

JC,
Two more brothers that I can think of:
General der Gebirgstruppe Ludwig Kübler
Generalleutnant Josef Kübler
While one was not a general, two more brothers:
General der Artillerie Anton-Reichard Freiherr von Mauchenheim genannt Bechtolsheim
Kapitän zur See Theodor Freiherr von Mauchenheim genannt Bechtolsheim
Despite the very distinctive name, Generalmajor Gustav Freiherr von Mauchenheim genannt Bechtolsheim was actually a somewhat distant cousin of the two brothers listed above.

Shawn

JC,
Also, I surmise these two were brothers:
General der Artillerie Maximilian Fretter-Pico
Generalleutnant Otto Fretter-Pico
Both were born in Karlsruhe, both entered the Army in Feld-Artillerie-Regiment Großherzog (1. Badisches) Nr.14 and BOTH formally added “Pico” to his name on 27 September 1922 through the justice minister of Erlaß. Pretty weird coincidence if they weren’t brothers!

While one was not a general, two more "Panzer-brothers":
Gen. Lt. Johann (Hans) Haarde
Obst. F. Haarde (sorry first name is unknown to me, as well as his whole bio, he was I. Abt./PR 8 1937-1941)
Nehring in his book states that they are brothers.

Thank you all, Gentlemen.
There's another interesting corollary to the question of relatives in the service of their country, and that is relatives in service to different countries. The US Army had a Major General George Back, the German Heer a Generalmajor Hans-Ulrich Back and there was a General Walter Krueger in both! Surely they weren't brothers but perhaps they were kin. Back and Krueger are fairly common names so there was probably no connection at all! But what about US Major General Paul Baade and German Generalleutnant Ernst-Günther Baade?
Anyone have any information on this?
