I recall somewhere seeing (in photos) Göring and Röhm smoking cigars, and Ribbentrop and Jodl smoking cigarettes. I seem to recall that Goebbels might have been a chain-smoker. Hitler was violently anti-smoking, but all those Nazis in movies usually smoked, often with an effete cigarette holder of black jet.

M. Bormann was a smoker but never smoked when Hitler was present.

Kaltenbrunner was known for smoking at least 100 hardcore cigarettes per day. In fact, his fingernails were corrupted for this very reason.
Of course, none of the leading (or minor) nazis was smoking in AH's presence.

P.s. How about Gertruda Scholtz-Klink?

Hitler did not allow people to smoke in his presence. That is all. After he commited suicide, most people in the bunker, lit up.

I read, that in his earlier times in Vienna Hitler smoked up to 40 cigarettes a day. He stopped for economical reasons, not because of his health. Like other converted smokers, he afterwards fobade strictly smoking in his presence.

There are several pictures of Himmler smoking small cigars. See one on the forum at

Eva Braun smoked like a trooper but never in front of Hitler, except during the last days in the bunker when Hitler was too distracted and ill to pay any attention. This is according to Traudl Junge's biog 'Until the Final Hour' at least.

Kaltenbrunner was also an alcoholic (contemporaries always commented on the smell of alcohol on his breath). If the Allies had not strung him up, he would have died from his addictions anyway. jv

Pardon my ignorance, but who was Kaltenbrunner? Status? Was he hung by the Allies?
