There were 688 Luftwaffe generals. Nikolaus von Preradovich in his book "Die Generale der Waffen-SS" names 100 such generals.

There were in excess of 3,000 generals in the Heer.

A ready-reference list of all WWII German generals of the Heer (Army) is under construction. All generals with the letters Kn to Z are already online. I am working on the letters A to K (with up to 3 portraits per person), which will be put online in about two weeks.

The list can be found at: http://houterman.htmlplanet.com/persons_german.html

Cheers,

Hans

Waffen-SS Generals

#5

Post by Ken McCanliss » 16 Jul 2003, 20:39

It should be noted that von Preradovich does not include any "political" generals, such as Kaltenbrunner, in his study; only military commanders are covered. The political appointees are noted at the end of the book.

Most of the political "generals" were given Waffen-SS rank late in the war in an attempt to place them under the protections afforded by the terms of the Geneva Convention. Such a thinly veiled ploy did not keep the likes of Kaltenbrunner from going to the gallows, however.

Number of generals

#6

Post by Schloss Adler » 22 Jul 2003, 01:37

Hi,

A while ago I started to compile a numeric listing of generals for all the services. I got as far as the Army only and the results are listed below. After a while I went cross-eyed trying to tally my numbers. Anyway, here is what I found out:

Generalfeldmarschall 19

Generaloberst 38
Generaloberstarzt 3
Generaloberstabsrichter 1
Generaloberststabveterinar 2
Generaloberstabsintendant 1

General der Signals 1
General der Artillery 71
General der PzTr 47
General der Cav 18
General der MtTr 17
General der Infantry 174
General der Pioneer 5

Generalleutnant 795
Generalstabsingeniur 1?
Generalstabsrichter 4
Generalstabsintendant 17
Generalstabsveterinar 15
Generalstabsarzt 43

Generalmajor 1,158
Generalrichter 22
Generalintendant 27
Generalveterinar 51
Generalarzt 98

Total: 2, 628

Perhaps someone can make changes or add to what I have. I never did a listing for the Luftwaffe but I know that there were 688 generals but I don't have a breakdown. Furthermore, I don't have breakdowns for the Navy and the SS.

Thanks,

Doug Batson
