As far as I know, the Hanstholm area was not declared a 'Festung', but only 'Verteidigungsbereich' (Defence Area).

Thyborøn was definitively not a 'Festung', but I can't remeber if it was a 'Verteidigungsbereich' or just a 'Stützpunkt' (Support Area).

Nice to give an answer to a topic so many years ago,but :

Hanstholm - Verteidigungsbereich
Thyborön - Stützpunkt Gruppe

GM Oskar Seelig is said to have gone missing as Kdt von Galatz on 7 July 1944. How is that supposed to have been possible? Galatz was only captured by the Red Army after the Jassy-Kishinev breakthrough. Any information on Seelig's fate?

Hello,

perhaps Seelig already disappered en route to take over his new command at Galatz? May have happened for example if he travelled in a plane that crashed or was shot down. See for example the fate of Generalmajor Hellmut Michalik who died this way June 7, 1944 in Romania. http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 96&start=0

This from his HPA cards

3.7.44 kdt.z.H.Gr.SU z.Verwendg. als Kdt.d.fest.Pl.Galatz
7.7.44 Stadtkdt.Galatz
4.9.1944 vermisst

There is a handwritten comment:
"Ende August 1944 b Galatz vermisst"

This suggest that he went missing at the end of August and was officially classed as missing by the HPA on 4.9.44

Regards

John

ps Askropp - I think your deductions are very good.

Thanks, you always have to read between the lines in order to get closer to the truth. Galatz fell on 28 August, so that could be the date.

I believe that there never was a "Verteidigungsbereich Hamburg-Bremen". There are nearly 100 km between both cities, and the appointment of Sinnhuber speaks only of his appointment as commander of the Verteidigungsbereich Hamburg:

25.03.1945 Kommandant des Verteidigungsbereichs Hamburg
02.04.1945 nicht wirksam geworden, kommandiert zum OB Führungsstab Nordküste für eine Sonderverwendung
06.04.1945 Führerreserve OKH (IV)

Now, in the Beurteilungen of Sinnhuber we find a note from Busch (dated 4 April) who requested that Sinnhuber should be relieved from command of Verteidigungsbereich Bremen (this is no tpyo or mistake because in a second note from 14 April, Busch explains his request and again speaks of Bremen). To me, this looks as if the intended "Sonderverwendung" was the command in Bremen. Apparently, Sinnhuber was considered as unfit for both commands, so they went to Wolz and Becker respectively. As none of the commands became effective, Sinnhuber should be cancelled from the list of fortress commanders.

Confused by conflict in appointments Kampfkommandant and Festungkommandant Metz 1944.
In books upon battle of Metz I noticed SS-Staf Kemper Kdr SS-Nachrichtenschule Metz is mentionned as "Kampfkommandant Metz" on july/september 44. (not mentionned in files).
Therefore in files Gen major Poten was Kommandant Metz from july 43 to september 1943.
On the hand, in files Walther Krause was appointed Festungkommandant Metz on 2 september 1944 (as well Kdr 462 Division).

so what's the real situation ?
Best regards

Georges
