Himmler, the SA man

#1

Post by GFM2000 » 15 Sep 2003, 12:51

After reading through Peter Padfield's biography of Himmler, I had yet to find something that intrigued me in young Himmler's life. I had always presumed he was a member of the SA as Gregor Strasser's adjutant before he was made a member of the SS. Is this fact correct?

Secondly, if so, what rank did Himmler hold in the SA (and/or SS) before he was made Reichfuhrer? I recalled seeing some old photos of Himmler in a brown uniform, with Oberfuhrer collartabs (ie: with the 2 oakleaves). I assume that's as senior as he had climbed in the SA hierachy before heading the "Adolf Hitler Shock Troops"?

Thanks !

I've never read of Himmler being an SA member. The brown uniform you've seen is an early SS uniform. Two golden oak leaves initially denoted an SA/SS general.

Himmler served as Stellvertreter-Gauleiter Niederbayer-Oberpfalz 12.1926 - 1927. He served as deputy to the Gauleiter Gregor Strasser and therefore he would have worn an ealry type of Brown uniform
