* 25. November 1889, Freudenstadt + 20. März 1981, Freudenstadt


Theo-Helmut Lieb trat am 20. März 1910 in das Infanterie-Regiment 123 ein. Er wurde am 18. August 1911 zum Leutnant befördert und kämpfte im Ersten Weltkrieg als Zug- und Kompaniechef und war zuletzt Hauptmann. Nach dem Krieg wurde er in die Reichswehr übernommen und 1923 Kompaniechef im Infanterie-Regiment 15. Anschließend wurde er Schwadronschef in einem Kavallerie-Regiment, Lehrer an der Infanterie-Schule in Dresden und bei der Inspektion der Panzerabwehr. Am 1. Oktober 1934 erfolgte die Beförderung zum Oberleutnant, am 1. April 1937 zum Oberst. Am 10. November 1938 wurde er Kommandeur des Infanterie-Regiment 27. Nach dem Frankreichfeldzug wurde er Kommandeur von Wuppertal und am 1. Juni 1941 zum Generalmajor befördert. Am 17. September 1941 übernahm er stellvertretend die Führung der 290. Infanterie-Division. Am 10. November 1941 wurde er in die Führer-Reserve versetzt und am 16. April 1942 Kommandant von Frankfurt. Ab dem 21. Februar 1943 führte er stellvertretend die 306. Infanterie-Division, am 1. April 1943 wurde er zum Generalleutnant befördert. Am 3. September 1943 übernahm er das Kommando der 112. Infanterie-Division. Am 1. Februar 1944 wurde er im Kessel von Tscherkassy zum Kommandierenden General des XXXXVII. Armeekorps ernannt. Hier erwarb er sich den Beinamen "Löwe von Tscherkassy". Für die Führung der Stoßtruppe beim Ausbruch aus dem Kessel wurde ihm am 7. Februar 1944 das Ritterkreuz verliehen. Am 18. Februar 1944 folgte die Verleihung des Eichenlaubes, das er als Generalleutnant erhielt. Anschließend wurde er in die Führerreserve versetzt. Am 1. Juni 1944 übernahm er die 34. Infanterie-Division in Italien. Er führte diese Division durch die Rückzugskämpfe durch Italien. Im Mai 1945 geriet er in amerikanische Gefangenschaft.

Hi Helly!

Here's a translation and another pic.

Theo-Helmut Lieb joined Infanterie-Regiment 123 on 20. March 1910. He was promoted to Leutnant on 18. August 1911 and fought in WWI as a platoon and company commander and ended the war as a Hauptmann. After the war he was accepted into the Reichswehr and in 1923 was a Company commander in Infanterie-Regiment 15. Later he was a Squadron commander in a Kavallerie-Regiment, Instructor at the Infanterie-Schule in Dresden and served with the Inspektion der Panzerabwehr. On 1. October 1934 he was promoted to Oberstleutnant, on 1. April 1937 to Oberst. On 10. November 1938 he was Kommandeur of Infanterie-Regiment 27. After the invasion of France he was Kommandeur of Wuppertal and on 1. June 1941 promoted to Generalmajor. On 17. September 1941 he took over temporary command of the 290. Infanterie-Division. On 10. November 1941 he was placed on the Führer-Reserve and on 16. April 1942 Kommandant of Frankfurt. From 21. February 1943 he was temporary commander of the 306. Infanterie-Division, on 1. April 1943 he was promoted to Generalleutnant. On 3. September 1943 he took command of the 112. Infanterie-Division. On 1. February 1944 he was named Kommandierenden General of the XXXXVII. Armeekorps in the Tscherkassy pocket. Here he earned the nickname „The Lion of Tscherkassy". On 7. February 1944 he was awarded the Ritterkreuz for his leadership of the troops in the breakout from the pocket. On 18. February 1944 he was awarded the Oakleaves. He was then placed on Führerreserve. On 1. June 1944 he took over the 34. Infanterie-Division in Italy. He commanded this division during the retreat through Italy. In May 1945 he went into American captivity.

The B&W photo that VJK posted is really a colorless copy of the color photo from the same photo shoot as the color photo Doggowitz posted. They were done by Walter Frentz.

be carefull then... Frentz´s son have the Copyright of these photos and he had many troubles in internet or books for used unauthorizated of these materials. 8O
