Robert Martinek was born in Moravia on February 2, 1889. In 1917 during World War I he was promoted to Captain because of outstanding bravery, and at the end of the War he served as a battery commander. He was also decorated with the highest medals of the World Wars I and II and was killed in action on June 28, 1944. Now, I would like to know how he was killed and in what Battle?

Hi Benoit,

Martinek was killed at around 5 pm on 28 June 1944 in an air attack near Beresino while on route to his new HQ, this was during operation Bagration and he was the commanding general of XXXIX.Pz.Korps.

Mark,

I appreciate the info, so he was killed by an air attack. Do you know or somebody else for that matter by who exactly he was killed?

Regards

A bomb's shrapnel (from a Soviet airplane) tore into his head. He was dead instantly.
