This is supposed to be Manstein greeting soldiers from 72 Inf Div who had escaped from the Cherkassy pocket. To his lft was an Obst Merkel, his ADC. You can see a RK there. Was he Herbert Doetrich Merkel who won his RK while he was kmdr, I/PzGrRgt 304/2Pz Div?
cheers
Freiherr

Hi Freiherr!
Maybe he is indeed Herbert Dietrich Merkel. There's another Merkel but the complete name is Hans Joachim Schulz-Merkel from I./PzRgt 35.
Hope it helps.
Best regards,
FANGIO

Patricio!! Schulz-Merkel was a medical doctor, a "Oberstabsarzt" with "Ritterkreuz". Where are you loafing about at the beginning of the new year !?!

ADC = Adjutant = IIa to Von Manstein as Commander-in-Chief Army Group South / Northern Ukraine in 1943/44 were:
Ob. Richard van Werder (02.1943-04.1943)
Ob. Erich Reuter (04.1943-04.1944)
Both Knight's Cross holders.
Most likely would be Reuter, but he doesn't seem to match facialwise: pics enclosed.
So, back to the drawing board....
Cheers,
Hans
