Wiehe gehts, Oberstab?
Gut gehts, danke!
There is a better facial view in one of his books- possibly "Panzer Battles" (U.S. edition). I am thinking of a photo taken on a parade ground on the inside of the dust jacket (though it may actually appear on the dust jacket in his other book "German Generals of World War II"- sorry but my books are in boxes in the basement till I move again; maybe one of our Forum members has one or both books and can tell you) but there are several photos of him inside "Panzer Battles". The publisher of both books was the University of Oklahoma Press.
I don't know much about publishers' inner workings but it looks like Angelika Tietz, Rights, Permissions and Contracts Manager, might be a good person to start with. Her phone is 405-325-5326, fax 405-325-4000 and her email address is [email protected] . Her mailing address is 1005 Asp Avenue, Norman, OK 73019. The relevant webpage for her department explaining steps required to request to use material from their books is http://www.oupress.com/inside.asp#permissions.
I hope this is of help to you.

Best regards,
Genstab
That helps a lot, many thanks. Dieter

In the introduction to my (UK) edition he speaks fondly of his mother, but adds that she
...passed away in August 1950, a few weeks before I left for South Africa.
which seems to narrow down the date somewhat.

As for where in South Africa he moved to, he says of his wife that her
...grandfather emigrated to South Africa in 1868, where his family is firmly established in the Eastern Province...
So he had in-laws in the Eastern Province already.

Those quotes were taken from pages 8-9 of "Panzer Battles", F.W. von Mellenthin, Tempus Books. (First published in Great Britain 1955 by Cassell & Co. Ltd)

I need a short bio of F.W. von Mellenthin, especially of his promotion dates. I couldn't found it on ABR or AHF...

He was in the Ruhrkessel, but only captured on 3 May? Does this mean he went into hiding for over two weeks?

From the English version 'Panzer Battles':

"Personally I was not prepared to be put 'in the bag' if I could avoid it, and accompanied by a small group of officers I made my way eastwards. We covered more than 250 miles, lying up during the day and moving by night, but our hope of joining the Eastern armies proved vain. On 3 May we were captured by American troops at Höxter Wessel [Weser ?!]."

John

Do I understand it right that Mellenthin did not get a RDA before the war ended?
