Can only say that he's a Major, possibly a Major i.G. (im Generalstab). Appears to wear the Kriegsverdienstkreuz I. Klasse mit Schwertern. Also has the 1939 Spange zum 1914 Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse (on ribbon in buttonhole).

Best wishes,
~ Mike

Could it be Major Ernst Freiherr von Althaus, the WW1 Fokker ace? He didn't serve during the 3rd Reich era, but bore the honorary rank of Major in the Luftwaffe.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Thanks for the hints. I am not so sure, if the uniform shows what it is meant to show. The picture was taken in Italy shortly after the war was over, so ...

Ernst Freiherr von Althaus? Do you by chance happen to have a picture for comparison?

Thanks a lot

Good. Von Althaus worked as an interpreter for the Allies after the surender, so it could be him. I have a picture, although it shows him over 20 years younger in his WW1 heyday. It may help, though.
cheers,
Jeremy

Not Wearing His "Blue Max"

Gentlemen,

Well the Luftwaffe major wasn't wearing the Pour le Merite. So it couldn't be von Althaus.

Wow Jeremy, what a service, thanks.
However, I have to agree, I don't think it is Althaus, although as I said the uniform cannot be relied on, since it is after the war and basically this officer could just wear any uniform. But what strikes me most, are his ears - the so called facial fingerprints. They don't match at all!

Any other idea?
