Can anybody shed some light on Ulex life before 1931, please? As a later Corps Commander I think he must have had some General Staff positions before (Department Leader, Chief of Staff). :|

Hi!

Here is some info already posted on this forum:

Here is what I can add.

Gen. d. Art. Wilhelm Ulex
*15.07.1880 +26.06.1959

An artillery officer by profession Ulex became officer in the 2. Artillerie-Regiment of the pour le merite holder Kurt von Dewitz (who unfortunately died too young) after the Grand War. His first post war promotion to Major took place on 01.10.1922 (5). Later he became CO of the IV. (Reitende) Abteilung of the 6. Artillerie-Regiment, which should have been part of the 3. Kavallerie-Division before becoming CO of an Artillerie-Regiment and Artillerieführer. Already in 1936 he left his 12. Division, handled over command to Albrecht Schubert and became Kom. Gen. of the newly set up XI. Armeekorps (Hannover). His Chief of Staff was Georg von Apell until becoming Chief of Staff Gruppe 2 and replaced by Erwin Vierow. His last promotion to full general took place on 01.10.1936 a massive promotion date. His seniority number was (6) [1: Gen. d. Art. Dr.-Ing. Becker, 2: Gen. d. Inf. von Witzleben, 3: Gen. d. Kav. Freiherr von Weichs, 4: Gen. d. Kav. Freiherr Kreß von Kressenstein, 5: Gen. d. Kav. von Pogrell, 7: Gen. d. Art. von Reichenau]. IIRC he was thought to be a member of the Bekenntnisfront/Bekenntniskirche and hence an enemy of the NS-regime. He was consequently retired in 31.03.1939 but was already recalled on 26./27.08.1939 to led the X. Armeekorps, which was without Kom. Gen. after Gen. d. Kav. Knochenhauer died in 1939. Reading Krausnick: Hitlers Einsatzgruppen, one gets the info that he was part of the army officers (Blaskowitz, Küchler, Liebmann, Ulex) protesting against the brutal methods of Police/SS in Poland 1939. He became CO of the Grenzschutz Süd in Poland (which was created from Hammerstein´s Armeeabteilung A). This position was followed by Kom. Gen. im Wehrkreis I (Stv. Gen. Kdo. I. Armeekorps).

His awards:
Königreich Preußen, Haus-Orden von Hohenzollern, Ritterkreuz mit Schwertern
Königreich Preußen, Eisernes Kreuz 1. und 2. Klasse
Verwundeten-Abzeichen (1914) in schwarz
Großherzogtum Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Militär-Verdienstkreuz 2. Klasse
Hansestadt Bremen, Hanseatenkreuz
Kaiserreich Österreich und Königreich Ungarn, Militär-Verdienstkreuz 3. Klasse mit Kriegsdekoration

Hence his Große Feldspange looked like the 1st pic above:

Did Ulex attend the Kriegsakademie and if yes when. Was he general staff qualified?

Thanks
