Herbert was my friend. He passed away on October 6th this year.
Served time in Russia before his unit was split into two and his half went to the channel Islands where he remained until the end of the war. He was taken as a captive to Wales at the end of the war. Worked in a coalmine and married a local farmers daughter before migrating to Australia.
A machine gunner in an infantry division. Saw some horrific things in Russia which reduced him to tears even until his death.
He was born in Kopenick Berlin and was 19 in 1942.
Any advice on how to obtain any service history would be greatly appreciated as he lost his Soldbuch at the end of the war
