Born Trieste in 1888 Hans Helffrerich
He spoke fluent Spanish,Italian,English and French
Had actually been a Hptm in WW1
Sept 1935 joined the Army and posted to AST Stuttgart (Abwehr out Station),
Jan 1937 took part in the Spanish Civil War as a liason officer in the Italian Expeditionary Force (Roatta) with the Abwehr.
Was injured in a car accident late 1937 and had to return to Germany.
March 1939 posted to AST Prague as head of Dept 111-F (Security and Counter -Intelligence work against enemy-espionage),
but in April 1939 was sent to Italy as liason officer between the Abwehr in Berlin and the Italian Military Org (SID).
Was a great friend and admirer of Canaris who hated the Nazis,
actually when captured by th allies asked to live in Italy and died there.
1943 Head of AST -Italy dissolved in 1/3/1944 apparently liked by Harster

I came across the brief bio of "Helffrerich" but hvae to wonder about the spelling.

Where were his postings in Italy?

The correct spelling of his last name is HELFERICH, which does indeed look a bit more plausible than "Helffrerich".

According to the Allied CI War Room London postwar reports, he was the Abwehr Verbindungsoffizier to the Republik d.Salo (The Mooses's RSI government with HQ in Salo/N Italy.
