The death of Generalfeldmarschall von Reichenau

#1

Post by Potsdamerplatz » 22 Apr 2006, 18:35

I have just been reading about the circumstances surrounding the death of Field Marshal Walter von Reichenau in the book "HITLER'S FIELD MARSHALS"

In an attempt to keep fit, von Reichenau used to go on a daily cross-country run. In January 1942, he ran several miles in temperatures well below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. When he returned, the Field Marshal complained of feeling unwell and later that day he had a severe heart attack. After being unconscious for five days it was decided to fly him back to Germany for further treatment. Walter von Reichenau died on 17th January 1942, when the plane carrying him to Leipzig crash-landed.

He seems to have been very unfortunate, first having a severe heart attack and then dying in a plane crash whilst returning to Germany for treatment. Does anyone have further information on what caused the accident?

Thanks in advance for all help and information.

Best regards,

David

Thanks Dieter.

As the forum grows larger every day it is becoming harder to use the search function efficiently. I will enjoy checking out this thread. Many thanks again. :D
