Postby Dutto1 on 20 Nov 2009 21:14

Hi

I was wondering if we could all pool our knowledge together and make a list of all the Leibstandarte veterans still alive in 2009 it would be interesting to see a list nearly 65 yrs since the end of ww2

Hmmm, I'm not going to give full names because most of them are listed in the German phonebook and as such easy to find if I do. I respect their privacy.

That's why I say "maybe".A good decision.
I can also add to the list 4names, but I can't tell you if they're still with us:

Ostubaf Hubert Meyer (b.1913, reported still alive in Dec 2008 )
Hstuf Georg Isecke (b.1919, still alive in Jan 2008)
Ostuf Gunther Keue (b.1918 fate unknown)
Ostuf Helmut Gaede (b.1920 fate unknown)

They all served before in LAH and then in HJ.

Totally agree.

65 years after any war, most of the veterans have passed away. That's true for WWII, the Great War, The Civil War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Trojan War etc. That's just actuarial science.

What is the purpose of this thread? Why is such a list interesting?

Are LSSAH veterans "better" than other WWII German veterans? Why not list surviving members of the Heer 3092nd Communication Company?

Do LSSAH veterans have unusually low mortality rates? (Due to all the yogurt and museli they ate at the barracks at Lichterfelde, no doubt)

Is this some sort of attempt to "honor" LSSAH veterans?

Dutto1, I'd be interested in reading your reasons for starting this thread?

Hi Everyone,

I think i should have explained myself more before posting. Ive been interested in German armed forces since i was 12 or 13 i read a book called Waffen SS by Keith Simpson thus started my hobby .Over the years ive collected books on the Heer Waffen SS,and ones on life in the Third Reich.I must point out though i am in no way a SS groupie or any way politcally motivated by my hobbiy. The motavating reason for the list was not to harass any living vets, for photos or autographs i have an interest in research and writing on the subject.I have a few ideas but with any book i would like to write i would like veteran input to add to a book to enhance it.I understand that veterans are very old now some want to forget the war, others are quite happy to talk about it.Why the LSSAH well the ideas ive got involves the Battles they fought 1943-45 however Heer input would also be reqiured regarding the LSSAH, Patrick Agte is in charge i believe of a archive of 1ss Panzerkorps documents left by vets to help researchers but ive read if you don t follow his leanings youve got no hope of him contacting you.I ve Pm Harro to explain my reasons for the list i was a bit silly i think to ask people to post names in case other people do try and contact the vets through the German Phonebook, ive also asked Harro for advice on how best to approach them without worrying them.As ive said its not just about the LSSAH my hobby is wide and varied ive just obtaines a Court File From Leitmeritz in Sudetenland with 95 documents dated from 1938-45 which quite a few mention various personalities and Untermehmen Richard Regards Ron

Hi dutto1, thanks for your response.

LSSAH well the ideas ive got involves the Battles they fought 1943-45

My suggestion would be for you to do a study on the LSSAH's operations during the reoccupation of Italy and the antipartisan actions in Croatia/Slovenia. A very dirty campaign undocumented by most, if not all of the division's postwar histories.

Patrick Agte is in charge i believe of a archive of 1ss Panzerkorps documents left by vets to help researchers but ive read if you don t follow his leanings youve got no hope of him contacting you.

Do some research on Agte. My understanding is that he's a pretty controversial figure, not only for his writings but for his dealings with the LSSAH veteran's community itself.

Hi Rob-wssob2,

I have read that Patrick Agte stole Werner Wendts script for his Michael Wittmann book,i also understand that at his wedding the guest of honor was Gudrun Burwitz , Himmlers daughter who is part or was of the Stille Hilfe organisation.I also belive that if you write to Agte he will only reply if you write in German and have his poltical leanings. As for his books the Jochen Peiper book is good but very bias in regards to his service with Himmler and portrays Peiper as the perfect soldier. My question is if the LAH vets are that dissatisfied with Agte why dont they remove him from their organisation and get a more liberal person to do it who will share info with researchers.

With regards the LSSAH service in Italy it is well documented but the service in Croatia and Slovenia im not to sure i was not aware what is your source....Ialways thought it was the 16th panzergrenadier div REICHSFUHRER SS that served in Croatia.

With regards to the other posts i will reply this evening once im in from work

Many Thanks

I suppose you cannot ask that question without asking if he has not been removed already (for example, he isn't welcome anymore at meetings from the I. SS Panzerkorps Truppenkameradschaft) and I doubt they actually want a "more liberal" policy towards researchers. I'll never forget what an LSSAH veteran once wrote to me: "Ich habe schon für drei jähre Der Freiwillige abbestellt. Agte ist ein ganz Große Räuber. Er will alles haben. Er hat ein Reichsheini-tic. Es sind mir Kameradenfrauen bekannt die ein Bild für Nachruf oder Suchanzeigen geschickt haben. Sie haben diese nie mehr zurückbekommen." It matches what other veterans told me in conversations.

It's a shame Agte's allowed to get away with that Harrow
Der Freiwillige was there to help the veterans not make money out of them.
Dutto1 are you going to share the names you have from the court paper's

Sadly Erwin passed away today. His son just called me. He hadn't been well for a while and his quality of life suffered so it was maybe for the best. Farewell my friend!!
