A Most interesting account of discussions on the Standschützenbataillones is addressed below. You can follow the whole discussion on the link at the end of the extract...

Tirol-Vorarlberg Bataillones also received traditional Rifle Association Battalion titles.

Standschützen-Bataillon Bludenz I
Standschützen-Bataillon Bludenz II
Standschützen-Bataillon Bozen
Standschützen-Bataillon Bregenz
Standschützen-Bataillon Brixen I
Standschützen-Bataillon Brixen II
Standschützen-Bataillon Bruneck I
Standschützen-Bataillon Bruneck II
Standschützen-Bataillon Dornbirn I
Standschützen-Bataillon Dornbirn II
Standschützen-Bataillon Dornbirn III
Standschützen-Bataillon Imst
Standschützen-Bataillon Innchen
Standschützen-Bataillon Innsbruck I
Standschützen-Bataillon Innsbruck II
Standschützen-Bataillon Innsbruck III
Standschützen-Bataillon Kitzbühel
Standschützen-Bataillon Kufstein
Standschützen-Bataillon Landeck
Standschützen-Bataillon Lienz I
Standschützen-Bataillon Lienz II
Standschützen-Bataillon Meran I
Standschützen-Bataillon Meran II
Standschützen-Bataillon Reutte
Standschützen-Bataillon Salurn
Standschützen-Bataillon Schlanders
Standschützen-Bataillon Schwaz

There is a discussion in: Roland Kaltenegger, Spezialverbände der Gebirgstruppe 1939-1945, Motorbuch, 2004 re: Tirol-Vorarlberg battalion locations.

The Standschützen (Ss) were established by Gauleiter of Tirol -Vorarlberg, Franz Hofer, before the Volkssturm (Vs) was set up and the Ss organisation may have been entirely different from the Vs. One source indicates that Ss bns were roughly 1200 men, whereas Vs bns were roughly half of that.

Tiroler Standschützen in Ostmark (Austria), basically an Alpiner/Gebirgsjäger Volkssturm Innsbruck and Lienz which point to at least 2 battalions in those locations as well.

Hofer states that 30,000 were mobilized for the Ss and that bns. were 1,200 men each. That gives a notional number of 25 bns. as a ballpark figure... each presumably with a minimum of 1 bn. each; which accounts for 23 of our 25 notional bns.

Additional Information

The attempt by the Gauleiter of Tirol -Vorarlberg, Franz Hofer, to rename the Volkssturm to Standschützen in 1945, was rejected by Adolf Hitler. However, this did not prevent Franz Hofer, from having the Volkssturm battalions of the Gau wear Standschützen battalions their own sleeve characters, in a diamond shape, with a Tyrolean eagle on the swastika and the inscription "Standschützen battalion ( place ) ".

In the Osprey Book - Resistance Warfare 1940-45 by Carlos Caballero Jurado on page 5, states that two Standschützen-Bataillon were named -

Standschützen-Bataillon Gossensass
Standschützen-Bataillon Mals

These are in addition to what I have previously added.

[quote]Next inquiry, regarding the Standschützen mobilised as Volkssturm 1944/45: Has anybody found regulations governing their insignia? There are problems with their collar tabs. The left tabs indicate rank per Volkssturm regulations (numbers of "pips") but the right tabs are anomalous. Most use a combination of Roman and arabic numbers, for example, II/4, where II (following normal practice of the period) = battalion number and 2 = company number. Volkssturm battalions on paper had four companies, so the arabic numbers should not exceed four, and indeed in most cases they do not. However, some Standschützen right collar tabs use a letter prefix and have company numbers over 4, for example, LII/11, LII/16 (actual samples). L is attributed in some sources to Lienz but could just as well be Landeck.... and if L = a placename, why do we not find others with prefixes other than L? [quote]

I would be interested in any ones response.

Most respectfully

Mark
