Division Lanz - Caucasus 1942

#1

Post by Brian R » 22 Sep 2010, 05:13

I'm researching 4. Gebirgs-Division in the fall of 1942. At some point during the summer, Divison Lanz was formed which included, among 1. Gebirgs-Division, major parts of 4. Gebirgs-Division. It appears that by fall, the unit had pulled back to the area south of Maikop. Specifically, I have reference that elements were in the area of the Pschischbaches in area 843 in late October. Does anyone have any specific info on this area? Could Pschischbaches be a river? As usual, I appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thanks,
Brian

Pushing this one to the top. Does anyone, by any chance, have the division histories for 1. or 4. Gebirgs-Divisions?

Hello Brian !

The Pschisch is indeed a creek that has its spring about 50 km east of Tuapse and runs
first into northwestern direction before it turns to the northeast and north.

Division Lanz reached the Pschisch (or Pshish) in mid October 1942. during the next two weeks,
their units were able to advance roughly 5 km further into southeastern direction and finally
took Ssemaschcho mountain during the next two weeks. That was the farthest they could get.

In the following weeks, until mid December, fierce battles were fought in this area, at the
cost of 823 dead, 2142 wounded and 199 missing between Oct., 21st and Dec., 13th. The soldiers
were also suffering heavy from the weather conditions, with temperatures changing constantly
between +5 and -5 degrees Celsius. This resulted in a lot of mud on the roads and trails and
in high water in the creeks running through the valleys below. As a result, the already difficult
supply situation became disastrous. In mid December started the general retraet from caucasus.
[All infos and map from the history of 4. Geb.Div. by Roland Kaltenegger].

If you combine these facts with the impressing pictures Tigre posted in the part of his thread on
the Gebirgsjäger in Kaukasus you might get an idea under which extremely hard conditions
the soldiers (on both sides) had to fight.

You can find a good map of that area here :

HTH helps your research 8-) !

Best regards,

hero.

Hero - Thank you so much for supplying the additional information and map. Your post is extraordinarily helpful as the context of my question relates to an EK II recipient who led a supply convoy accross the Pschisch.

See the fifth EK document shown here...

It is related to Division Lanz and one of the reasons I started this thread years ago.

Thank you hero for your post and your attached map. May I ask where this map is from? Are there other maps from this area but a week earlier?

Thanks!

It's a map from a German book with German spelling. In Russian, spelling of that river is Пшиш. Does not look German to me.
Apparently it's Bzhedugs.
