Brandenburgers in Africa

#1

Post by D Haimerl » 18 Mar 2011, 20:15

I have a few questions concerning the Brandenburgers in North Africa. I know about the 13th Company under von Koenen of which at least a half company arrived in fall 1941. This half company was at Bir Hachim and later at the El Alamien positions. Now supposedly the 11th Company of Lehr Regiment Brandenburg was assigned to Sonderverband 288 (if one looks at feldpost numbers then number 07 836 has for 12.7.41-26.1.42 11. Company Lehr Rgt 'BR' then 1. Sonder-Company Verband 288; and 15.7.42-24.1.43 1. Company, PzGr Rgt 'Afrika') now did the 11th Company ship to Africa with SV 288 and stayed with the unit becoming 1. Kp/PzGr Rgt'Afrika' or was it detached for other purposes.

For Operation 'Dora' under Konrad von Liepzig which unit(s) of Brandenburgers did von Liepzig and his men come from-the 13th? the 11th? a mixture of several?

I know a handful of Brandenburgers were sent to Irag in May 41. Does anyone know which unit they came from? Were they the mixture of Brandenburgers which were then assigned to SV 287. As a related question after Major von Hippel was removed from command fall 1940 of I Bn/LRB what did he do prior to his assignment as commander of German-Arab Legion in Tunisia.

Lastly, in Kurowski when discussing Abteilung von Koenen it mentions there were 5 companies. The 5th Company was an enlarged 1st Platoon of KJ Company. Also know the 9th and 13th Companies were used to form Abteilung. Would I be making a correct assumption that when the Abteilung was formed the 2 half companies of both 9th & 13th Companies each became a company thus creating the 4 remaining companies?

Thank you for any and all assistance. No I do not have access to Helmuth Spaeter's Die Brandenburger though I keep hoping to find a copy of it.

The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41

Oberleutnant von Koenen's detachment is reported to have arrived 21 Nov 41.

Liepzig should probably be Leipzig?

Thank everyone for their reply. A huge thank you to Brad Hunter! I've never heard of Bookfinder.com, and I use Abebooks all the time but I was always searching Spaeter's complete first name. Again, thank you very much-I've got the book on order.

Does anyone have any clue where to find pictures of the Brandenburgers, any operations at all.
I am looking for pictures of the Brandenburgers that we can buy out and reprint in a article about them, and if anyone could help me out, or point me in the right direction I would be very happy.

Please answer here if you got an idea - or email me direct on: [email protected]
