British Veteran looking for help to trace a 12th SS Officer.

Postby paulh1944 on 08 May 2012 21:19

Over the last few years I have become friends with British Army veteran who served during WWII.He served with the 6th Royal Scots Fusiliers part of the 15th Scottish Division .He was 21 when he took part in operation Epsom and after all these years the one thing that he speaks about that left a lasting impression on him was when he was sent out on patrol in around the town of St Manvieu. He came across a German observation bunker and being somewhat gun ho he charged right into this bunker. He discover in this bunker a 12th SS officer who had taken his own life .The veteran then realized that had this officer not taken his life he would have killed the veteran given how he had charged into this bunker.
Looking around the bunker the veteran noticed that it was lined with white sheets obviously taken from a local farm house and that it was scented with french cologne.
Now realizing how stupid he had been charging into the bunker and potentially how closed he came to been killed he started to think about this SS officer now lying dead in this bunker and so he decided to check to see what documents this officer had on him. He found a wallet that included his name along with personal items such as family pictures and letters.
The veteran still dreams about this officer to this day and has ask me if I can find out anything about this officer.
I have a name and approx date as to when this officer was killed and I am wondering if anyone can advise how to go about doing this research.

Maybe Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. is a good place to start:

You know that the officer was killed during the war and maybe you can find him with "Gräbersuche".

Thank you very much for your replies. I spoke to my veteran friend asking him to try and remember as much as he could about the details of this German officer. The date this event took place was between the 27th of June to 3/4 of July. The officer names was either Horst Press of Horst Pruss.
Again thank you very much for your replies.
