How are kampfgruppes any different than how the US Army normally fought in ETO (except for KG Peiper, I don't know alot about them)? When a US Army unit conducted an operation they would take either a combat command (armored) or a regimental combat team (infantry), detach what manuever and slice elements they don't need, and attach what non-organic armor, infantry, artillery, reconnaissance, TD, engineer, and ADA they need from higher army, corps or other division units. These were temporary, mission-specific task forces (usually named after the commander of the CC or RCT used as the basis) and were disbanded upon completion of the mission. If this is anything like how a kampgruppe operated (which KG Peiper did), the US Army did this on a constant basis. If you go to US Army CMHO and look at the division orbats, you will find that CCs and RCTs rarely fought with just their organic forces alone and no cross attachments and detachments. I apologize for drifting off topic.
