Malgre nous

A relation of mine was a malgre-nous (against our will)

The unit in the Heer he was conscripted on 21 September 1942 was called 2/Reserve Infantry Battalion 19. What I know is that it was sent to the Eastern Front.

After falling ill due to lice bites, he spent time at a military hospital or Schwetz/Weichsel.

On 1 November 1943, a message was sent saying that he had been transferred to a new unit called 9./Grenadier-Regiment 248.

I know the DD-WASt office in Berlin may be able to help. Could anyone give me a few clues on where these units were stationed? It would be really appreciated.

The Infantry Replacement Battalion 19 was formed on 26th August 1939 in Munich, in Wehrkreis VII. Formed from Landesschützen Battalion IV / VII . On 21st September 1942 the battalion was in Munich and was divided into an Infantry Ersatz Battalion 19 and a Reserve Infantry Battalion 19. As of 1st October 1942 it was seconded to the replacement battalion of the 467th Division The Reserve Battalion passed to the control of 157th Reserve Division and was moved to Chambery in France. The two Battalions were on the 7th November 1942 renamed the Grenadier Ersatz Battalion 19 and Reserve Grenadier Battalion 19.

The reserve battalion formed on 1st May 1943, the first battalion of the Grenadier Regiment 866 of 355th Infantry Division. The Reserve Grenadier Battalion 19 was subsequently rebuilt . On 20th December 1943 a new Reserve Battalion was formed to rebuild the 276th Infantry Division. As of 1944 , it supplied the Reserve Battalion replacements for the 7th Infantry Division and the 296th Infantry Division. On 21 July 1944 , the Reserve Battalion was renamed to Grenadier Ersatz und Ausbildungs Battalion 19.

Grenadier Rgt 248:
Forme 15th October 1942 by the renaming of Infantry Regiment 248 and the 88th Infantry Division. In 1943, the Second Battalion was disbanded, the III. Battalion was on 2 November 1943 renamed Füsilier Battalion 188. In January 1945, the regiment was destroyed in the Vistula at Baranov, remains came to Glogau.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply. It's most appreciated.

Where can I find a list of military hospitals or Lazarette? The one my relative was in was in Schwetz/Weichsel.
