Hello,

These are several different units and most of them are incorrectly written/abbreviated by you. Please add a scan so we do not need to guess to help you.

The last unit seems to be 3rd company of Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 79, which was part of 4. Panzer-Division.
Vendriki is a small village near Peļni, between Dobele and Auce, north of Bēne, Latvia.

In Croatia he served with Reserve-Pionier-Btl 46 which belonged to 173 Reserve-Division, which operated under LXIX Reservekorps (itself operating under 2 Panzerarmee). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be very much information published about the Reserve Divisions and their operations.

You may need to look up any files in NARA that cover OKH in the Balkans (T-78 Roll 874 has details of the activation and organisation of Reserve units including 179 Res.Div while Roll 352 has some maps but as I do not own those two rolls I can not say to what extent the details are) or Heeresgruppe F to provide details.

Hi Wreckdiver,

3rd Company/46th Reserve Pioneer Battalion is best known for being ambushed by the 3rd Vojvodina Brigade (Yugoslav Partisans) on 23 August 1943 around Neštin, Serbia. The company lost 63 KIA, 3 WIA, and 23 MIA. The missing men were exchanged in early September for some 60 civilians held in Ruma prison. Court-martial was convened to examine the responsibility of company commander 1st Lieutenant Weingartner and Lieutenant Langhorst who was responsible for the training mission on that day.

(NAW, T-311, Roll 285, 000774-80; these Army Group F documents do not contain information on the outcome of the investigation).

The father of one of the soldiers who was killed that day wrote a letter to the OKW blaming the officers for the fate of the company (NAW, T-77, Roll 1421, 000632-3).

The war diary of the 173rd Division (August 1943-February 1944) can be found in NAW, T-315, Roll 1535. Rolls of the 2nd Panzer Army for the same period contain the division's daily reports.

Cheers,

G.
