Hi,

what can you folks tell me about this photograph? It looks possibly like German navy. Notice the hats in the locker and the steel helmet on the top. Those uniforms hanging up appear to be army? Also the writing on the right hand side of the locker, can anybody read/translate? Any input on what this picture is all about would be VERY appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

Hello,

As you said it is the locker of a Kriegsmarine soldier. He is a member of the Schiffsstammabteilung 10 which is a unit to Train new recruits etc...

Hey,

in german Armies there where always orders about the lockers. That is because in an alarm the mates have to find the devices of soldiers who are not present ( e.g. Wachgänger).

Topics for a google search could be:
- Spindordnung
- Schrankordnung
- Zentrale Dienstvorschrift (ZDv)

This is all very interesting information. See, I suspect this picture is from a relative of mine who served in the German military. This photo was taken of the original so the information on the back is unknown. I believe my relative served in a anti aircraft unit during the war. From what I was told he may have been stationed near some V2 rocket facility's and shot down many allied aircraft. This may be unrelated as I am not certain if this photo is related. But thank you all for the reply's.

It is interesting to note that the 10. Schiffstammabteilung fought against the British paratroopers in Operation Market Garden.

Late in the war, these Kriegsmarine training units were used as infantry and two Schiffstammabteilung (10. and 14.) participated in the battle.
