57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman 1941
57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman 1941
Hi, everyone, German order of battle by Samuel Mitcham mentions 57. Infanterie-Division and 100. Jäger-Division took part in the battle of Uman in August 1941, but I cannot find related for both units in this battle. Any one have details on their action in this battle like what unit they subordinated or what area they fought, Any detail is welcome.
Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman
Hello Kelvin ; a brief complement.........................
100. le. ID by Uman.
That division was within the LII. AK (General Kurt von Briesen) and in fact fought a little southwards of the encirclement crossing the Bug river by Ladyshin and then..........(following the 101. le. ID in the same Army Corps) on July 28 1941, the 101. le. ID was advancing along the road leading to Uman towards Gaiworon, that place was reached on July 31 1941. After fighting for Golowanjewsk from 6 till 8 Aug 1941, marching to the Dnjepr River and got across it at Krementschug. So while the cauldron was being finishing off at Kopjenkowata - Podwyssokoje, the 100. le. ID was around Golowanjewsk or nearby.

Hi, tigre, thank a lot. Did 57. Infanterie-Division join this battle too ?
Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman
Hello Kelvin ; you're welcome. Regarding the 57. ID, AFAIK at the time advanced by Lubar, Berditschew and Tetylow to the encirclement by Uman as part of the III. AK (mot.) under General Eberhard von Mackensen within the 1. Pz Group (General v. Kleist). So it fought on the opposite side of the cauldron (eastwards). Cheers. Raúl M .
Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman
Hi, tigre, thank again, as I know, 3rd Motorized Corps was assigned to stop any reinforcement from Soviet 5th and 26th Armies from the East, so mean that corps did not take part in fighting in Uman, so 57. Infanterie-Division only played a minor role in this battle : stop reinforcement from Russian to save 6th and 12th Armies.
BTW, in accordance with the map you attached, it is first time I find 2rd Cavalry corps also took part in Uman fighting. before that, I don't any Soviet cavlary division fighting in this battle.

Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman
Hello Kelvin ; do not mention it...........Regarding the 2nd Soviet Cavalry Corps, in fact the sketch shows the Soviet 18º Army plus the Cavalry Corps, which (AFAIK) was fighting more to the south filling the gap between the 18º Army and the 9º Army (just from memory). Bear in mind that at the end of July the 6º and 12º Armies were attached to the Soviet Southern Front. Cheers. Raúl M .

Hi, tigre, thank so much.
Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman
Hi, Tigre, I see Samuel Mitcham book German order of battle mentions 295. Infanterie-Division also took part in battle of Uman. But I only see 297. ID in this battle. Do you know if 295. ID also joined in this battle ?
Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman 1941
Hello Kelvin ; here goes what I could get....................
The 295. ID - Uman.
On the evening of Aug 04 1941, the Army (17. AOK) subordinated the 295. ID, which was following in the rear, to the Gebirgskorps to redress the situation. Nevertheless the division was too far from the battlefield, so that it, no matter how the situation was developing, can no longer comes to effect. The 295. ID got the order to reach Ssemiduby in a night march. Its fast detachment came straight in the gap between the IR 477 and the GJR 13.
Source: Enzian und Edelweiss - Die 4. Gebirgsdivision 1940-1945.
See the map posted on 13 Jan 2015 14:59 and you will see the 295. ID close to the 24. ID. Hope be useful. Cheers. Raúl M .

Re: 57. Infanterie- & 100. Jäger-Division in Uman 1941
Hi, Tigre, thank so much for your help. When I calculate the number of German divisions which took part in this battle, I get less than 17 divisions in this battle, I don't know why they can encircle and annhilate more than 24 Soviet divisions which had several hundred tanks.
By the way, from Soviet side, did 4th Mechanized corps was in Uman pocket or outside it as reinforcement force to rescue encircled troop ? I see one book mentions 4th Mech.Corps also took part in this battle.

Hi, Tigre, thank a lot.
The term " vertical envelopment " by German Filgercorps, is it existed in WWII ? I would think helicopter borne troop air assault is vertical envelopment and landing.

Hi, Tigre, the map you posted shows 50,000 men of 6th and 12th Armies were encircled but as I know, over 200,000 Soviet forces trapped in Uman ? So exactly 50000 or 200000 were encircled ? Thank.
