50. Infanterie Division, 1941

#1

Post by CNE503 » 10 May 2015, 14:29

Hello,

This infantry division participated to "Marita" in April and May 1941. Thereafter, it was deployed in Bulgaria and then in Romania to participate to "Barbarossa". lexikonderwehrmacht states that it was withdrawn from Greece as of May 8th, 1941 and sent in Bulgaria, then in Romania. But I need to know when it was deployed in Romania and fully operational to take part in "München".

Thanks for your help,
Cheers,

The division started arriving in southern Romania early in June 1941 and kept moving further north. By 19th of June the division was spread out between between Focsani and Barlad.

Jeff,

Thanks a lot. May I ask you your source?
It means that the division joined its staging area in Romania in the first half of June, and was probably deployed into its tactical assembly area later on.

Thanks again,
Cheers,

I checked NARA T315 R943 (50.Inf.Div) and T315 R944 (50.Inf.Div.). The division was to stiffen the Romanian Divizia 21.Infanteri and Divizia 1.Garda, and some of the first arriving units were deployed to the Prut River (well the Pz.Jäg.Abt at least).

This is the impression I get from quickly looking through the documentation. I would need to look more closely for the details of the operation.

Hello to all :D; a little complement.....................

The 50. ID in Romania - June 1941.

On June 02, 1941, the last elements of the division arrived at the bridge over the Danube between Ruse and Giurgiu and proceeded towards Romanian soil.

Until June 08, 1941, the Division gathered in the space between the Carpathians and the Sereth at Focsani. Here it was subordinated to the LIV. Army Corps under General Hansen and the 11th Army under Colonel General Ritter von Schobert.

On June 12, 1941, the regiments and units of the division received booklets and guidance about the Soviet army and Russian dictionaries. There were now barely doubts on a war against the Soviet Union.

On June 14, 1941, the commanders of the respective units reconnoitered the Romanian-Soviet border in Falciu-Husi, dressed in Romanian uniforms. Before the division was an almost insurmountable area of swamp and the river Prut. Only two bridges at Falciu offered appropriate transitions.

Great!
I tracked the German major units that were involved in "Barbarossa" and the 50. Infanterie Division was the latest one.

Thanks a lot!
