help needed to identify date and rank of photo

The attached is of my father-in-law (seated) who became a cadet in 1919 or 1920. Any help you could provide with any information that can be gleaned from the photo would be appreciated. He would have been located in Muenster GermanyImage

He was in a band and smoked cigarettes.

Both are members of the cavalry:

Judging from their schoulderboards, the man standing could be a Hauptman (captain), and they guy sitting could be an Oberleutnant (First Leutenant).
Edit: the items fitted on the shoulderboards might not be one or two pips denoting rank, but regimental numbers. Both are junior officers however.

They guy sitting is indeed a member of a musiccorps.
