Total German losses in North Africa, 1941-1943

#1

Post by CNE503 » 17 Aug 2015, 14:49

Hello,

Does anyone know how many German soldiers were killed, missing in action, definitively wounded or prisoners of war during the desert war, from February 1941 until May 1943?
Some sources indicate 250 000, but I need a more precise figure, if possible with sources.

Has someone this sort of data?

Thank you for your help,
Cheers,

How precise information do you need? An exact number of casualties in total, or numbers broken down in some way?

I need to know whether it was 250 000, 320 000, 500 000, 800 000 during the German involvement in the entire north african campaign (February 1941 to May 1943). Not an exact figure, but at 25 to 30 000 near, I guess. If possible with the distinction between KIA, WIA, MIA and POWs, but I need the whole first.

No one on this one? Not even an educated guess?

Sadly, the OKH numbers I had for German casualties mention every front except Africa, and the Wehrmacht history of the Africa campaign does not seem to mention any overall casualties (unless it's in volume 1, which I don't have) so i can't offer anything better than what the established litterature claims.

It would be great still, Christian, to have these figures. I read so many different things that I don't know what to believe!

Cheers,

I don't have much newer material on the African campaign, so hopefully someone else will be able to give a more qualified response than I would.

Hi NagaSadow!

Great website! Thanks to sharing it!
Here what I found between June 22nd, 1941 and May 30th, 1943: 7 883 KIA, 33 195 WIA, 113 710 MIA/POW, ie 154 788 German soldiers.
I guess it is only Heer data, so no Kriegsmarine nor Luftwaffe figures, am I right?

An educated guess could be roughly between 175 000 and 200 000 German soldiers KIA/WIA/MIA between February 1941 and May 1943, don't you think?

Cheers,
