WSS Officer in Ligneuville - Dec. 17, 44???

In Toland's book on the Battle of the Bulge he mentions the massacre of the eight American prisoners by an NCO in KG Peiper at Ligneuville, on December 17th. However, he also mentions an "SS combat officer" who basically put an end to a possible massacre of fourteen other Americans. Apparently this information comes from Peter Rupp, the Belgian innkeeper at the Hotel where this occurred. I have heard of the massacre itself, but Toland's book is the only source I know of that mentions this "SS combat officer." Does anyone have anymore information about this event and who this officer was. Considering the brutality of KG Peiper, it would be interesting to know who this man was. Thanks.
