Literature about chaplains in Wehrmacht and SS

#1

Post by Anni » 14 Oct 2015, 08:23

Hi!
Help me, please, to find any literature (memoirs, monographs and so on) about chaplains in Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS. I am also interested in the religious education of German soldiers and the history of chaplaincy in Germany (in different periods).Maybe you know the literature on this subject?

It would be great if it is available on the Internet.Unfortunately there are no many good books in English in our libraries...

Thanks a lot for the help!

Welcome to the forum :welcome:

We've had some past discussions on religion in the German armed forces and in Nazi Germany. These threads will give you some information as well:

Anni,

I just ran across this. It is at the US National Archives and unfortunately I do not have a copy of the report. The report number and title are:

M 13, 8 Dec 1944 German Military chaplains. Organization of the department and adventures and opinions of one chaplain captured in Greece, 6 pages.

It is located in Box 656, Folder 1 of RG 165, Entry 179, Combined Services Detailed Intelligence Center (CSDIC). It would only take someone a few minutes to copy the report, so maybe you can get someone who lives nearby or happens to be visiting there to copy it for you. Please send me a message if you have more questions.

Sam, thank you for this information! Unfortunately I have no friends in US but, maybe, I'll try to find somebody who can help me with it...

Try writing to Marc from Digital History Archive; with the information provided by Sam, he should be able to find it: http://www.digitalhistoryarchive.com/research.html

Hi again! To whom did the chaplains obey - OKW or OKH? Sorry if this is a stupid question (and offtop) but i'm just a little confused... Thank you in advance! :)

Hi again Anni. According to Wehrmacht Priests: Catholicism and the Nazi War of Annihilation by Lauren Faulkner Rossi, it appears to be OKH: Pg 85 states: "The first detailed list of OKH regulations relating to pastoral care in the field came in August 1939..." I got this book after we last spoke.
