I have a doubt about the following pic of a member of the 5th SS Wiking, so, if anybody can help me I'll be grateful:

Image

Talking about the pic with some friends, we have recognized most of the medals but from the one depicted as "4", that is, the double SS runes which are close to his Wounded and Infantry Assault Badges.

I've been told that the double runes prove that he was a Reichdeutsche. However, if it is so, why were those runes been used by Volksdeutsche officers, like Phelps?

Image

Also, we find those runes in this pic of an Sturmbanführer from the Langemarck division:

Image

Nevertheless, there is another explanation. This Sturmann wears the SS there because he cannot do it in the "proper" place, where we can find the symbol of the Division.

Thus... who is right? What do the runes mean?

Isn't the officer on the right SS-Stubaf. Erwin Meierdress from Totenkopf? I've always thought this picture was taken near Modlin in Poland, august 1944.
